Deflection? Of Course. What’s Next?
Take your eyes off the ball - you miss the target.
There’s no doubt we need a serious debate about the Persian Gulf. Few genuinely want Iran to possess nuclear weapons. But let’s be clear: last week’s bombing wasn’t about halting Iran’s nuclear ambitions - it was a distraction from what Trump doesn’t want you paying attention to.
For 46 years, presidents from both parties have worked to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear arms. Even Trump, during his first campaign, claimed a nuclear-armed Iran was unacceptable, yet he tore up the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) - an agreement brokered by Obama and five other countries, enabling IAEA oversight. It limited uranium enrichment, capped centrifuge development, and restricted stockpiling, all in exchange for some sanctions relief.
The program was working! Iran was complying. So why scrap it? Because Obama signed it.
Some say Netanyahu convinced Trump that bombing these sites was necessary to “save the world” - a move that could land him the Nobel Peace Prize he so desperately craves. (Obama got one in 2009, and Trump’s been obsessed with dismantling his legacy ever since.)
That might explain part of it. But I believe there’s more going on. Putin stands to gain billions from unrest in the Middle East - and Trump has a long history of appeasing him.
In Trump’s mind, bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities sets the stage for a new deal. His deal. A legacy-defining triumph - and to him, that’s prizeworthy.
The more you look, the clearer it becomes, when Trump generates chaos, it’s often to cover something up or to shift our gaze elsewhere.
So what do they want us to forget?
Human rights violations against immigrants and citizens abducted by masked agents with no ID or court order, deported to countries they aren’t from
Trump’s presence in the Epstein files
Tariffs dragging down the economy
Defiance of court orders and the Constitution
The military deployed in California despite no public safety threat and remaining there
Record-breaking protests against this administration
Questions surrounding Musk’s interference with voting systems and DOGE manipulation
The “Big Beautiful Bill” that adds $5 trillion to the national debt, increases funding for DHS and ICE while slashing Medicaid, SNAP, Medicare, Meals on Wheels, and kids’ cancer research. It even blocks state control of AI for 10 years![i]
Withholding FEMA and disaster relief to punish political opponents, with plans to phase out FEMA altogether[ii]
Suppression of dissenting voices
Tariffs triggering business closures and job losses
Russia’s escalating attacks on Ukraine, and the cabinet’s and Congress’ incompetence and loyalty oaths
Dismantling the GAO, the agency that’s exposed fraud and waste for decades (Why did we need DOGE when we had this agency?)
Accepting a $400 million plane without Congressional approval
Silence after the assassination and shootings of Democratic Minnesota legislators and their spouses
Gutting DEI and firing of women and people of color in government
Selling off federal public lands
Israeli support for genocide in Sudan
And that’s just some of it. The longer I think about it, the longer the list grows. I bet if you gave it a moment, you could name more too. Let me know in the comments.
So, what can we do?
Plenty!
Legislators and media may look away - but we won’t.
From gutting Meals on Wheels to blocking cancer care for kids, this destruction must end.
Stay sharp. Stay loud. Stay involved.
Eyes wide open, hearts wide awake.
